On August 31, 2026, Khon Kaen University (KKU) joined the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Mekong Institute (MI) at the event titled “Commemorating 30 Years of the Mekong Institute,” held under the theme “People – Partnership – Progress” at the Mekong River Conference Room, 2nd Floor, Annex Building, Mekong Institute Headquarters, Khon Kaen.
On this occasion, Assoc. Prof. Nawarat Wara-Aswapati, Vice President for International Affairs, Khon Kaen University, represented KKU at the event and congratulated the Mekong Institute on this significant milestone marking three decades of achievements.
Khon Kaen University is one of the Mekong Institute's founding institutions and has played an important role in supporting its establishment, growth, and continued development over the past 30 years. This longstanding partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing regional cooperation and sustainable development across the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
The event brought together representatives from government agencies, the diplomatic corps, partner organizations, former MI leaders, and partners to reflect on the Institute’s development and achievements over the past three decades, while reaffirming their commitment to further advancing regional cooperation.
Highlights of the event included welcome remarks by Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn, Executive Director of the Mekong Institute; notes of appreciation from MI Council members; congratulatory remarks from representatives of consulates; a reflection on the Institute’s 30-year journey by Dr. Narongchai Akrasanee; the video presentation “Built for People, Partnership, and Progress”; and a networking session among participants.
Through its International Affairs Division, Khon Kaen University has continuously played a role in connecting and promoting educational cooperation across the Greater Mekong Subregion through academic networks, exchanges, and educational opportunities supported by scholarships under the GMS cooperation framework. The 30th anniversary of the Mekong Institute therefore marks another important milestone in strengthening this longstanding partnership and jointly advancing sustainable regional development.
