The International Affairs Division, Khon Kaen University (IAD, KKU) organized a three-day camp from 14th – 16th February 2025 (Cultural Trip 2025) with overnight stay in the rural village of Sanuan-Nok Subdistrict,Huai Rat District in Buriram province, for graduate international students and exchange students of Khon Kaen University.
The International Affairs Division arranged various activities for the students to learn about traditional Thai culture in Northeast of Thailand (E-Sarn) and further strengthen their friendship among one another A total of 50 international students from 9 countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines and USA participated in the program.
The day began with a visit to the Lower Isan Cultural Center, Buriram Province, which situated in Buriram Rajabhat University on Chira Road. The Centre collects and exhibits artefacts and precious historical objects, folk arts, and archaeological evidence.
After that we went to visit Khaokradong Volcano Forest Park Located in Ban Nam Sap, Tambon Samet, Phu Khao Fai Kradong is an extinct volcano of which the crater can be seen clearly. It is 265 metres high above sea level. Formerly, it was named “Phanom Kradong” in Khmer language, which means a turtle shell mountain, as it looks like a turtle’s shell. Places of interest in the Phu Khao Fai Kradong Forest Park include: Phra Suphattharabophit, the large golden Buddha image in the posture of meditation sits on the Kradong mountaintop. The students marveled at the awe-inspiring architecture, intricate craftsmanship, and serene atmosphere of this revered Buddhist temple.
On 15th February 2025 , IAD organized activities to enhance Thai culture under the theme "Local culture: Local Virtuous Community" at Sanuan-Nok subdistrict,Huai Rat District in Buriram province which was aimed at opening a chance for International students participate in the multi-cultural exchanges their knowledge of community lifestyle through 1 work-shop and demonstrations of making a traditional Thai dessert: Khanom Tod Ma with local ingredients.
In additionally, we organize an Isan-style dinner (Pa-leng) with Bai Sri Su Khwan Ceremony that is a common Hinduism ceremony in the northern and northeastern (Isan) regions, derived and influenced from Lao culture. It is a ceremony to call the spirit back to oneself, to have the spirit as a guardian of life, to strengthen the mind, to ensure safety, and to bring good fortune.
On 16th February 2025, we went to visit Phanom Rung Historical Park.It is situated at Ban Ta Pek, Tambon Ta Pek. The important historical site – Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is situated on the top of an extinct volcano at a height of about 200 metres. (Phanom Rung or ‘vnam rung’ in Khmer language means ‘huge mountain’).
The activities made a great impression on the students and their peers and were very helpful in opening up a variety of cultural experiences. The activities also were a good opportunity to exchange views on life and study and build good friendships with each other. At the end, the students thanked the International Affairs Division, KKU, and the organizers for arranging all the enjoyable and useful activities and expressed the hope that another Cultural Trip would be organized soon.
