On October 1st, 2025, Khon Kaen University (KKU) had the great honor of welcoming H.E. Mr. Mark Gooding OBE, British Ambassador to Thailand, together with representatives from the British Embassy and the British Council Thailand. On this occasion, His Excellency delivered a special lecture entitled “International Relations Between Thailand and the United Kingdom” to commemorate the 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in key areas, particularly in education, science, research, innovation, and international affairs. The lecture took place at the International College, KKU.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Asst. Prof. Acharawan Topark-Ngarm, Assistant to the President for International Affairs, along with Asst. Prof. Sirimonbhorn Thipsingh, Dean of Khon Kaen University International College, administrators, faculty members, and students.
H.E. Mr. Mark Gooding OBE remarked that the lecture reflected the deep and multidimensional cooperation between the UK and Thailand—including in education, culture, science, innovation, and climate change. He emphasized the importance of educational exchange, noting that a significant number of Thai students choose to study in the UK each year, while researchers and academics from both countries continue to collaborate. These connections, he said, are foundational to long-term sustainable development and mutual understanding.
Asst. Prof. Acharawan Topark-Ngarm, stated that “Khon Kaen University is deeply honored to welcome His Excellency and the delegation. We are delighted to celebrate this meaningful milestone, which reflects the strong and enduring partnership between our nations, especially in education, science, research, and innovation. The university looks forward to further strengthening these collaborations for the benefit of our students, faculty, and the global academic community.”

The long-standing friendship between Thailand and the UK has flourished through mutual cooperation, particularly in education. The event concluded with a Q&A session, allowing students and attendees to engage directly with the ambassador, exchanging ideas on international relations, youth engagement, and future collaboration.
In addition to the academic program, H.E. Mr. Mark Gooding OBE and his delegation visited the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts to participate in a cultural exchange focused on traditional Northeastern Thai music, arts, and performance.
Assoc.Prof.Dr.Burin Plengdeesakul, Dean of Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, along with faculty members, warmly welcomed the delegation and shared local cultural knowledge. Activities included live demonstrations of Isan folk music and the Khaen, a traditional reed instrument of the region. The performance by the Sin-Sai Pong Lang Band from KKU captivated the visitors and showcased the vibrancy of Isan cultural heritage.
The ambassador enthusiastically participated by trying the Khaen himself and engaging in cultural dialogue with both faculty and student performers. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and appreciation, highlighting the power of cultural heritage in fostering international friendship and understanding.
To conclude the visit, the delegation toured the Natural History Museum Khon Kaen University where they explored exhibits reflecting the university's commitment to education, culture, and community outreach.
