On 29 October, 2020, at Mekong Institute, the administrators of Khon Kaen University led by  Assoc. Prof. Nawarat Wara-Aswapati Charoen, Vice President for International Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic, Asst. Prof. Acharawan Topark-Ngarm, Assistant to the President for International Affairs, together with Ms. Netdao Chamroendararasmee, Acting Director of International Affairs Division, and Mrs. Wilawan Ungsunantawiwat, Head of International Affairs Section, congratulated Mr. Siriyan Vichitlekarn on the occasion of becoming Executive Director of Mekong Institute. On this occasion, the administrators discussed various topics such as academic and research collaborations, Mekong economic development, and further policy development. 

Assoc. Prof. Nawarat Wara-Aswapati Charoen, Vice President for International Affairs, said on behalf of the administrators of Khon Kaen University, they would like to congratulate Mr. Vichitlekarn on the occasion of him taking the Executive Director of Mekong Institute position, and that it is a big honor to have the opportunity of working with and developing further collaborations with him. Khon Kaen University is a center of education and is developing towards internationalization. There is the International Affairs Division, KKU, which is a central network providing such services as student service, staff and lecturer service, and scholarships. For instance, the KKU ASEAN-GMS Scholarship which provides scholarships for ASEAN or GMS region students to study and conduct research at Khon Kaen University. Moreover, Khon Kaen University is a Medical Hub Center and is strengthening the innovation of medical health care, especially AI for healthcare which is one of the projects being supported and is expected to be applied in real practices soon.   

Mr. Siriyan Vichitlekarn, the Executive Director of Mekong Institute, said, “I feel very thankful for your warm welcome. Mekong Institute has a mission to contribute through human resources and capacity building to the acceleration of sustainable economic and social development, and poverty alleviation in the Greater Mekong Subregion through cooperation and integration as per the MI Charter 2003. This operated under three thematic areas: 1. Agricultural Development and Commercialization, 2. Trade and Investment Facilitation, and 3. Innovation and Technological Connectivity. Also, I would like to drive knowledge advancement in order to apply for policy development, and allow researchers to conduct work and transfer the implementation to industrial works. In the future, the institute would like to develop the Mekong Subregion, build mutual understanding among the country’s members, and drive our role by gaining financial support from Korea to create the ‘Post Covid Recovery Program’ which has two main types: regional activity and national activity, including a focus on medical services and international conferences.”     

Mekong Institute (MI) has been an independent organization since 2003 with its office located in Khon Kaen University, Northeastern Thailand. It focuses on the participation of 6 governments of the Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Chinese province of Yunnan.
