» Three new plants of the world found in Thailand and Vietnam (2331 Views)

Professor Pranom Chantaranothai, a lecturer from the Biology Department, Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University, cooperated with researchers, both in the country and abroad, and discovered three new plants: two plants inThailand and one in Vietnam.

The new plants were found in Thailand with cooperation from Mr. Seksan Pumpho, a student from Ubon Ratchathani University, who trained as an intern student. The two new plants were discovered in Helicteres, Malvaceae. These two plants have creamy white sepals and the cones are connected together in a tube with the tip separated into five lobes. The petals are five independent petals with the colors of purple, purple-whitish, or fawn. The fruit or pod is brown, oblong, with densely hairy skin. The holotype is being kept at the Plant Museum, Khon Kaen University (KKU), and isotypes are preserved at The Forest Herbarium (BKF) and Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden Herbarium (QBG). Information on both plants was published in Tropical Natural History, Vol. 20(3), pages 235 - 243, 2020.

2. Helicteres thailandica Chantar. & S. Poompo

The other new plants were found in Vietnam in cooperation with Professor Phan Ke Loc form VNU Hanoi University of Science (HUS), Mr Quach Van Hoi, Tay Nguyen Institute for Scientific Research (TNISR), Dalat, Lamdong, and Mr Nguyen Hoang Tuan, Hanoi University of Pharmacy (HUP), while exploring for plants on the sandstone slopes in the Hill Evergreen Forest at Langbiang Mountain in Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park, Lam Dong Province, South Vietnam, during 2014-2016. Additionally, a new plant was found in Mastixia Nyssaceae. In addition, a taxonomy was created to identify the three species of plants of this genus of Vietnam. This research was published in Tropical Natural History, Vol. 20(3), pages 228–234, 2020.

These are the details of the new plants:
Mastixia lanbianensis Phan Ke Loc & Chantar. It is a large tree, 30-35 meters tall, similar to plants in the Wah genus but the difference is that it has white latex, young branches, and hairy leaves with no leaf border. The ovary has only one locule and the edge is parallel. Researchers have named it 'Lantianensis'. The first holotype of the Phan Ke Loc & Quach Van Hoi P11448 plant was preserved at the Plant Museum, Hanoi University of Science (HNU), and a pair of prototype specimens were preserved at the Plant Museum, Khon Kaen University.
