» Lessons learned from the Covid-19 crisis in India - KKU joins the Thai-India academic conference on managing the Covid-19 crisis. Experiences from India's front lines, case study of the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Delta variant in Haryana India (2268 Views)

On August 18, 2021 at 15.00 hrs. Khon Kaen University, led by Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University, attended the international academic online conference COVID-19 Crisis Management: Experiences of the Delta Variant Spread in Haryana India. This meeting was organized in cooperation with Khon Kaen University, Thai PBS station and the Government of Haryana and honored by Dr. Satit Pitutacha, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Royal Thai Government (Thailand side) and Mr. Anil Vij, Health & Home Minister, Government of Haryana, India (India side) who presided over the ceremony opening. Dr. Suwit Khunkitti, Former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, introduced the origin of this meeting.

Dr. Satit Pitutacha, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Royal Thai Government, said this international conference aimed to exchange useful information between Thailand and India about the COVID-19 crisis, which has affected the world. All sectors must be prepared to handle this crisis. However, handling the crisis effectively requires listening to experiences and learning lessons from others. Especially the references from Haryana can be very helpful. This meeting will benefit medical professionals, Public Health staff and various related organizations.     

Mr. Anil Vij, Health & Home Minister, Government of Haryana, India, said: “We will share experiences and useful information at Haryana with Thailand. All departments in Haryana have been devoted and have worked hard in order to save people’s life during this pandemic. I strongly believe that this meeting could assist you and those involved in gaining experience and being ready to deal with problems and obstacles in the future. 

The President of Khon Kaen University said during the meeting that “due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation, it has been very useful to participate in this meeting. Currently, Delta variants have been found in various provinces in Thailand, including Khon Kaen province. Khon Kaen University is the central University in the Northeastern Region of Thailand, with a population of one third of the country. The pandemic has been managed by the Faculty of Medicine, Srinagarind Hospital, and other faculties, including medical institutions, who have worked together to solve this crisis. Khon Kaen University is also a “Medical hub” providing excellent medical services, and has a good reputation in the country and in the GMS (Greater Mekong Subregion). Khon Kaen University is also a center for Health Science Research institutes, an Emergency Medicine Center and Laboratory, and has strong medical collaborations both nationally and internationally. Presently, KKU has developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robots to care of and treat patients, and developed innovations to reduce infections and close contact with patients. I hope that this meeting will exchange experiences from many specialists, and build a network of cooperation of medicine, research etc. in the future.

Within the international academic conference, there are many exciting topics such as COVID in Haryana – Introductory Perspective by Mr. Rajeev Arora, IAS Additional Chief Secretary to Government of Haryana, Health Department, Logistics Management in COVID crisis by Mr. Prabhjot Singh, Mission Director National Health Mission, Government of Haryana, HR, ICU Services and Post COVID Centers -Overcoming Challenges in Second wave by Dr. Veena Singh, Director General Health Services, Government of Haryana and others topics from medical experts and public healthcare professionals from India. 


In addition, Assoc. Prof. Dr Piroon Mootsikapun, Professor of Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine, Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine Khon Kaen University also attended the meeting and discussed the important factors in controlling COVID-19 such as lock down, herd immunity, success of vaccination and treatment. 

Thailand also discussed issues to exchange information and build medical collaborations, by having Dr. Preecha Prempree, M.D., Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disease Control (Thailand Ministry of Public Health) and Dr. Nattapong Wongwiwat, M.D., Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services (Thailand Ministry of Public Health) joining the exchange on Public Health system management in Thailand as well.
