September 1, 2021 – Assoc. Prof. Apichat Jirawutthipong, M.D., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University presided over the opening event of the new MRI, which has the magnetic field strength of 1.5 Tesla. The machine will add to the accuracy and capacity in the hospital’s diagnosis work.

The new MRI 1.5 Tesla has the capacity in detecting diseases in different organs with more details and accuracy. The machine can also diagnose more cases within shorter period and covers nearly all parts of the body, for example, diseases in brain, heart, breast, abdomen, spine, medulla, pelvic organs, cerebral and trunk blood vessels, abnormalities of bone muscle tissue, joint ligaments, etc. and other organs that cannot be examined by CT scan. It can help diagnosing patients who cannot be examined by CT scan or by using angiography such as pregnant patients, patients allergic to contrast media or patients with kidney failure.

There is the special and modern software to accompany the machine that enables diagnosis of complicated diseases and the new technology, i.e., elastography (MRE), which is of high-sensitivity and specificity for fibro scan that indicates initial cirrhosis.

In addition, the machine has been designed with a wider and shorter tunnel that reduces the patient’s stress when being in it. There is also music played during the diagnosis, too.

The Head of Department of Radiology explained that at present the Excellence Center for CT & MRI of Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University intends to open the service for one more MRI machine so that there will be 3 of them operating. The MRI 1.5 Tesla is the modernist in terms of technology. It is highly efficient to diagnose complicated diseases and enables doctors to accurately indicate the disease, leading to efficient treatment. The machine can also shorten the waiting list of patients for at least 1-2 months. It is open for service on Mondays thru Fridays from 08.30 a.m. to 16.30 p.m., in parallel with the existing MRI.
