Loi Krathong is one of the “Heet Sipsong Khong Sipsee” or twelve-month ceremonies that Thai people have upheld for generations and carried forward from the past to the present. It is an important tradition that is held on the 15th day of the full moon of the 12th lunar month. The common belief of this tradition is to ask for forgiveness from the holy rivers, and to worship Phra Upakuta Arahant, who is believed to have resided under the ocean to participate in the ritual. Loi Krathong is both a tradition of central Thailand and of Thai people in the regions. Isan people hold the Loi Krathong tradition, because they believe in worshiping and asking for forgiveness from the water, therefore preserving the gracious cultural heritage. KKU Art & Culture Center will hold this event, focusing on Isan culture and contemporary culture even during the COVID-19 crisis.
