Ajarn Tanapong Intara, Ph.D., a lecturer of the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Sciences, Khon Kaen University, the research team leader, and his students win an award from the 2022 National Research from their “Detection System for a Gun-Concealing Person by Analyzing CCTV Image.”

The award is under the 2022 honorary invention award in the field of Information Technology and Communication Arts.

The National Research Council, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation awarded the invention-category work at the honorary level of 2022 in the field of information technology and communication arts to Ajarn Tanapong Intara, Ph.D., a lecturer of Department of Statistics, Faculty of Sciences, Khon Kaen University, the research team leader and his students under the 2022 National Research from their “Detection System for a Gun-Concealing Person by Analyzing CCTV Image.” The work is useful for society and the public in the prevention of crimes that are becoming more severe, especially in risk places such as malls, ornamental gold shops, and banks. Even though at present, CCTV camera is popular and much in use for surveillance and following up of the situation that takes place, it cannot give out warning or detect the specific details of the event. CCTV, therefore, is only used for recording the event”.

Ajarn Tanapong Intara, Ph.D., a lecturer of Department of Statistics, Faculty of Sciences, Khon Kaen University, explained that this work started from a senior project under the program that he worked with a group of students in 2020, including Miss Yupaporn Wanna and Miss Pimonpan Chachomporn (now already graduated). This project received the second prize in the 22nd Thailand Computer Program Development (NSC 2020) and received the first prize from Prime Minister Award, in the category of A Digital Youth of the Year 2020.  Then the work has been extended as a Startup with support from Khon Kaen University Science Park and TED Fund to enter the Business Brotherhood Project. The success of this work is owing to the administrators and staff of the Science Park, KKU, and Faculty of Sciences.

Ajarn Tanapong Intara, added, “Frequent cases of crimes nowadays bring a great deal of losses, necessitating malls, ornamental gold shops, and banks to contract insurance companies for warranty. However, compensation does not mean one can bring back lives that have been lost. The research team, therefore, developed this Detection System for a Gun-Concealing Person by Analyzing CCTV Images. The image is real-time and based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning. AI detects objects in the event and identifies the person with normal and not-normal behaviors such as a person concealing a gun, and distinguishes between them. The system then gives out a warning to the source for action to be taken or for suppressing the possible event. At present this system is under development for real use, which will reduce loss of both lives and assets and reduce the severity of the event. At the same time, it is extensible as a business startup”.

The Detection System for a Gun-Concealing Person by Analyzing CCTV Image was awarded the 2020 National Invention. The awarding ceremony will take place on February 2-6, 2022 at Bangna BITEC Center, Bangkok. The awarding is aimed to support and promote research work, inventions, and honor Thai researchers who have done their work for the benefit of the country. In addition to receiving the award, Ajarn Tanapong also received the invention prizes of 2021-2022 from a web application for constructing a 3-dimension simulation of false teeth for dentistry by using photogrammetry training, and the VideoQR invention: Concealing data on video and retrieving the data from re-recording the video using the cell phone.
